Lot Essay

The present lot is a single vintage print of one of the images William Eggleston included in his first portfolio, 14 Pictures, which he made in 1974. Although the portfolio represents Eggleston's first experimentation with the dye-transfer printing process, he still considers this grouping of images to be among his best. Similar to other works created at the time, such as Untitled, Greenwood, Mississippi (Red Ceiling), 1973-74, which quickly entered into the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, these images are unified by the absence of people, striking use of raking angles and intensely saturated color.

This work in particular has, for the reasons mentioned above, been regarded to be the strongest of the portfolio, and individual prints are considered exceedingly rare.
