Lot Essay

H.M.S. Grampus was a 50-gun frigate built at Portsmouth and launched in March 1802. Completed the next year, she spent most of her sea-going career in the East Indies until laid up in 1815. Converted into a troopship in 1817 and then into a hospital ship in 1820, she was returned to the Royal Navy in 1831 and sold out of the service in 1832.
