Hunt executed a number of figure studies of country people such as millers, gamekeepers, farmers and gardeners, engaged in everyday pursuits, such as in the present watercolour. It compares to other watercolours of gamekeepers at the Yale Center for British Art, New Haven, and to a watercolour dated 1827 entitled A Sportsman with a Boy, a Pony and a Dog for which it was suggested that the drawing could be of the Earl of Essex, one of Hunt's early patrons (sold in these Rooms, 9 November 1993, lot 34).
