Lot Essay

William Huggins was an animal painter who studied at the Mechanics Institute and the Liverpool Academy, he also worked from life at the Zoo. He exhibited at the R.A. from 1846 and his drawing is good and colour brilliant, few artists have better painted the eye of the lion. (H. Mallalieu, Dictionary of British Watercolour Artists, England, 2002)
