Lot Essay

In 1840 Muller sought metropolitan success and moved to London. There he came to know the watercolour artist David Cox, who had decided - at the age of fifty-six - to paint in oils, and who took several lessons in technique from Muller. This picture shows the influence of Cox on Muller, particularly in the handling of the sky.
