Lot Essay

William Webbe is best known for highly detailed, exceptionally rendered works, in the Pre-Raphaelite manner. Influenced and inspired by Holman Hunt, he visited the Holy Land in 1862, where the present lot was possibly executed. Another work from this period was sold at Christie's King Street on 17 June 2014 as lot 23. Specialising in animal subjects and genre, he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution and at the Royal Society of British Artists.
