Lot Essay

Born in Denholm, Roxburghshire, Johnstone studied at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1919-23. From 1931 he taught at various schools and rose to become one of the most important figures in British post-war art education. He held the position of Principal of Camberwell School of Arts beween 1938-46 and of the Central School of Arts and Crafts between 1947-60.
