Lot Essay

Francis Guerin Lloyd (1848-1920) was the president of Brooks Brothers Clothier, New York for many years. Mr. Frederick Baker notes that Mr. Lloyd had, at various times, summer homes in Quogue, Long Island and Bernardsville, New Jersey and that he was said to have had the largest collection of Japanese prints in his day. Chase also painted a portrait of Mr. Lloyd's wife, Matilda Herbet Lloyd. The inclusion of (presumably) Mr. Lloyd's dog in the portrait makes it most unusal.

According to Mr. Frederick Baker the present work is included in Ronald G. Pisano's Complete Catalogue of Known and Documented Work by William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), vol. II.
