WILLIAM MOUNCEY (1852-1901) Lots 68-69 Having worked as a house-painter, painting landscapes in his spare time, Mouncey decided to paint full-time in 1886. His landscapes were strongly influenced by his brother-in-law, Hornel. In some respects their styles were similar - emphasising particularly the decorative aspects of nature, painting with full impasto, vigorous brushstrokes and warm tones but Mouncey placed more emphasis on atmospheric effects than Hornel. His subjects were principally taken from around Kirkcudbright where he was born.
