Lot Essay

This picture is typical of a body of commercially viable genre subjects completed by Frith, depicting solitary young women in everyday circumstances. Their thoughtful demeanours sometimes hint at a hidden weight of love or sorrow. Others include Sweet Dreams (1844), Ready for the Morning Ride (1855) and The Flower Seller (1871).

We are grateful to Ruth Wood for her assistance in preparing the catalogue entries for this and the previous lot.
