Lot Essay

Alexander, 1st Baron Falconer of Halkertoun, was a judge appointed Lord of Session in 1639. He was created Lord Falconer on 20 December 1647 and made a Privy Councillor in 1661. The eldest son of Sir Alexander Falconer of Halkertoun, he descended from Ranulphus, appointed King's Falconer by King William I of Scotland, known as William the Lion (d.1214).
It is likely that the present portrait was painted around 1730, as a posthumous depiction of the sitter.
