Lot Essay

David, 5th Baron Falconer married the eldest daughter of William, 2nd Earl of Kintore (d.1718), in 1703. Haulkertoun, is an estate in Kincardineshire held by the Falconer family from the beginning of the 13th century and gave them their baronial designation from 1647 when ennobled by King Charles I. The Falconers' name, as the name of Haulkertoun also suggests, indicated the family's early services as falconers or hawkers to the King. The grandson of Lord David Falconer, portrayed here, succeeded to the title and estates of Kintore on the death of the 10th Earl Marischal in 1778.
