Lot Essay

Scott worked on several paintings with a similar motif to the one seen here in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The motifs in the present lot are similar to the Berlin Blues series of 1965-66, and in a Hanover Gallery exhibition of 1965 which was largely made up of such works, Norbert Lynton wrote that, 'His colour, which had shown an earthly vigour, has become dainty. His forms tend toward the whimsical. Perhaps we are seeing Scott's paintings at a transitional and possibly undecided moment' (see N. Lynton, William Scott, London, 2004, p. 288).
