Lot Essay

Simpson covered the marriage of the Emperor of China for the Illustrated London News in 1872. He exhibited paintings from the Chinese tour at Mr Thompson's Gallery in Piccadilly (All Round the World) and published his own account (Meeting the Sun, London, 1874).
