Lot Essay

Simpson was in India in 1875, working for the Illustrated London News following the tour of the Prince of Wales. He left for India on 28 September and arrived in Bombay on 30 October. He wrote: 'I have often described the Prince's tour in India as 4 months of Lord Major's show' (W. Simpson, Crimean Simpson, London, 1903, p. 270.)
Simpson's watercolour of the Prince of Wales in the Terai beating the jungle with Sir Jung Bahadur Rana in the Nepal Terai, of 1876 sold in these rooms, 5 June 1996, lot 63 (£46,600).
