Lot Essay

William Turner of Oxford was an early apprentice of John Varley. The present drawing is Turner's composition after John Varley's 'The Plains of Marathon', sold, The Collection of Monsieur and Madame Gérald Bauer, Christie's, London, 22 January 2003, lot 21.
