Lot Essay

Yang Chihung was born in Taiwan in 1947. His abstract work fully illuminates life and reflects both inner and outer perspectives. More importantly, by balancing between abstraction and realism, Yang has achieved a spiritual perfection that is not only concrete but represents a detailed depiction of the soul. This stylistic perfection has gained him international accalaim, with critics considering him one of the most important Asian abstract artists today. Yang has experimented with various styles including realism, impressionism, surrealism, and expressionism. The reason behind such stylistic diversity is his identity as a scholar. During the 1980s, he immersed himself in Western contemporary art history as well as modern films , literature, and classical music to enrich his own artistic perceptions. He was also an active writer for the Artist Magazine in Taiwan on various art movements; in 1987, he published the influential Art Trends, which has continuously inspired and affected many emerging artists. Yang Chihung's artistic journey from the West to the East has been documented in Discovery Channel's CHINESENESS, from which one sees Yang's contribution to the art scene simplay as going beyond intercultural exchanges between the West and the East, but also an inspiration to the young and emerging artists of Asia. His identity as an artist and scholar also explains his unique artistic narrative that combines various cultural ideas. One instance of this is his recent work, Remembrance (Lot 236), in which the "stream of consciousness in Eastern lyrical form" can be seen as a culmination of Yang Chihung's artistic endeavors over the course of four decades.
