4o (304 x 258 mm). 13 color plates. (Some occasional pale spotting.) Original gilt-lettered cloth (spine partly perished).
Apparently the third edition -- the first having been published in 1854 and another recorded from 1855. "This chemistry textbook was a pioneering publication in the use of color to convey quantitative information" (Reese). It is reminiscent of the famous edition of Euclid by Oliver Byrne (see lots 95 and 96). It remains a scarce and little studied work. Reese, Nineteenth Centuty American Color Plate Books 82.
