Lot Essay
Untitled (Lot 1168) is one of Yun Gee's few landscape paintings which contain episodes of narrative, its composition comes from his work Madrid Landscape with a White Building created in 1928 when he went to Spain. Although an authentic scene is used in Untitled as the foundation, Yun Gee has in fact employed a surrealistic way to present compositional details, such exuberant imagination reveals the artist's comprehensive consideration on the presentation of theme and format.
Untitled has carried on with Synchronism, which has greatly influenced Yun Gee in 1920s. Based on the investigation on optical spectrum's effect on the manifestation of colour, the artist breaks away from the colour inherently assigned in reality, and mainly makes use of red, green and yellow to create almost all the light and shadow effects of the landscape, the brilliant bright colour of the painting possibly comes from the artist's subjective feelings or from his imagination and anticipation towards a bright future. The Surrealist movement was in full flower in France during the 1920s and '30s, this kind of artistic creation originates from dream and fantasy which detach from reality and rationality; in the painting, the couple and the doggie seem to be on their way back from a walk, their elongated figures suggest that it is at the time of sunset, however the shadows of trees on the left, the doggie and the couple seem to be illogically inclined on the corresponding slope surface, as such Yun Gee makes clear the exact temporal setting, and at the same time, by introducing some reality-contradicting details, breaks away from the authentic setting, and strengthens the dream-like atmosphere created by the use of colour. Despite delineating the scenery with delicate brushstroke, the artist has transformed all the unnecessary fussy details into simple geometrical scenery, which under the artist's ingenious arrangement, creates an undulating rhythmic movement-the slopes in the foreground, the houses and woods in the midground, and the river in the background interweave with each other, creating a clear sense of layering. With the technique of multi-point perspective being employed, the scenery is presented in an unusual way with some twists and turns, so as to create coherence with movement of the figures, and leave more freedom to the composition of the picture. Untitled breaks away from mere delineation of landscape and story, by combining imaginative scenes and formatic elements such as colour and composition, Yun Gee reveals his inner world with a setting which situates between reality and vanity.
