Lot Essay

Berdasi merah (Wearing a red tie) was painted when the artist was still in art school, the tie perhaps a representation of his impending graduation in 1998. He had submitted this to the annual Philip Morris Indonesian Art Awards in 1997 and earned a mention in the awards which exhibited the work. Even in his student days, Yunizar was already producing works of merit. This early piece by the artist is more raw, showing a little more experimentation in attempt to resolve his earlier style, and unaffected as yet of the prevailing artistic landscape. As can be seen in this early work, it is a good comparison to his later development where he simplifies his compositions and returns to the basics with cleaner lines and painting in a more candid manner.
