Lot Essay

Zainul Abedin is arguably one of Bengal's most renowned artists. Widely recognized for a series of works executed during the Bengal Famine of 1943, these works bear witness to the depravity and helplessness of its victims. Throughout his work and teaching, Abedin sought to synthesize local traditions with modern international techniques and developments in art, thus creating a new Bengali modernism.
