Lot Essay

This collection of paintings comes from Mr. Lui Shu Ying (1919-2000). He started a finance company in Hong Kong at the young age of 16. Then he moved to Shanghai in the early 1940s to expand the business and returned to Hong Kong in 1949 when Shanghai was liberated. While he remained active in his investment activities , his daily life was completely immersed in the gardening of bonsai and in the study, appreciation and collection of Chinese paintings, jade and antiques. Mr. Lui and his lifelong good friend, Mr. Wu Yee Sun, a famous banker in Hong Kong, donated 31 pots of precious and very artistic bonsai to the people of the United States. The bonsai are still exhibited in the special complex built for these bonsai in the U.S. National Arboretum in Washington D.C. in the capital of the U.S.A.
Mr. Lui was very careful with the sources of his arts and painting collections. In the 1960s and 1970s, most of his Chinese paintings, jades, and porcelains and antiques were purchased from the two major antique arts dealers in Hong Kong, Tsi Ku Chai and Rong Bao Zhai.
Besides the five classical paintings, the Huai Qin Ge collection will also offer works by Pu Ru, Zhang Shanzi, Huang Junbi and others in our Fine Chinese Modern Paintings, Lots 2124-2134, to be sold on 29 November 2011.
