Lot Essay

Louis-Anne Marie Baron de Talleyrand was the uncle of the famous Prince de Talleyrand. He was an army officer who became Maréchal de Camp in 1781 and was sent as ambassador to Naples in 1788. He died in 1789. Mme. de Genlis described him in her Memoirs 'having very good looks but he was heavy in his conversation and not amiable'. A portrait of his wife (fig.2), the niece of Minister Calonne, and one of his brother are at Chantilly
