Lot Essay

Baron Joseph Henri de Bombelles (1721-1783) was the son of Henri François de Bombelles and Marie Françoise Suzanne de Rassé. He entered the army in 1736, became a colonel in 1757 and was promoted to the rank of Capitaine des Gardes Française in 1765. In 1780 he was created Maréchal de Camp. His cousin, the Marquis Marc Marie de Bombelles, a fellow officer, became a diplomat until the revolution and distinguished himself in the royalist army in exile. In 1803, the Baron de Bombelle entered a convent and became famous at the Restoration as Bishop of Amiens. In the background of the present drawing are the Invalides
