This is one of a group of pictures by a late-fourteenth-century Florentine artist akin to the Master of San Martino a Mersola, who like him was aware of the work of Agnolo Gaddi: the artist's Christian name is taken from an inscription on a picture deposited at the Accademia, Florence (Boskovits, fig. 396), which may, however, refer not to the artist but to the patron. Richard Offner originally attributed seven pictures to his Master of the Raised Halo and Zeri independently gave a total of twelve pictures including some of those considered by Offner to his 'Maestro del Cristo Docente' (cf. Boskovits, pp. 161-2, note 161): Boskovits added a further twelve panels, including this example to the group (op. cit., p. 162, note 162).
