Louis-Napoléon Bonaparte was a friend of Charles 3rd Marquess of Londonderry, and is
known to have visited Wynyard Park in the 1840s. Lord Londonderry campaigned tirelessly
for the release of the Abd-el-Kader circa 1851-52, continually petitioning Louis Napoleon
for his release, with an album of correspondence from the French Premiere being retained at
Wynyard Park for many years. Consequently this painting would have been an appropriate
gift from Lord Arthur Hill to his parliamentary colleague, Viscount Castlereagh, later 6th
Marquess of Londonderry, in commemoration of the latter’s grandfather’s efforts, a point
which was not overlooked in the hanging of the painting adjacent to the portrait of Abd-el-
Kader in the ball room at Londonderry House.
