MANZONI, Alessandro (1785-1873). I Promessi Sposi. Storia milanese del secolo XVII scoperta e rifatta. Leghorn: G.P. Pozzolini, 1827.

8° (220 x 135 mm.). 3 volumes. Contemporary English green calf gilt, edges gilt, by the Royal binder John Mackenzie (signed). Provenance: FRANCES MARY RICHARDSON CURRER (armorial bookplate, 1862 Sotheby sale), 1785-1861, whose great library at Eshton Hall, Yorkshire, was catalogued twice (by Triphook in 1820 and by C.J. Stewart in 1833), and who was "at the head of all female collectors in Europe" (Dibdin).

FINE COPY. The most celebrated Italian novel of the 19th century. The first edition, although dated from Milan 1825-26, was not actually published until 1827 and was quickly followed by nine other editions in the same year. The Livorno edition has always been regarded as the second edition, but Parenti (Bibliografia Manzoniana 37) places it fourth. All are OF CONSIDERABLE RARITY. Charles Swan's English translation was published at Pisa in 1828. Miss Richardson Currer, who was born in the same year as Manzoni and whom Richard Heber at one time contemplated marrying, had a strong collection of modern literature in fine bindings although her library was best known for its holdings of the classics. Brunet III, 1388. (3)
