Lot Essay

In the 1950's Husain visited China and met with the painter Chi Pai Shih. He was influenced by Chinese philosophy and techniques of painting: 'what is important is what you don't do.' (Daniel Herwitz, Husain, Bombay, 1988, p. 20.) Chinese artists often work with strong, bold strokes emanating from quick wrist movements. In the current work Husain has adopted and adapted the technique, with the use of large brushes he has created dark areas and subtle tones using only a few strokes. The blank white areas of the canvas lend an integral balance to the painting and create a controlled simplicity to the landscape.
