According to Husain's autobiography (Where Art Thou, ed. Khalid Mohammed, Mumbai, 2002, p. 110), after marriage and the birth of his first son, Shafaat, in 1941, Husain gave up his work on cinema hoardings for the stability of a monthly salary (Rs. 25) at a Fantasy Company factory producing toys and furniture for children. By 1947, the year of India's independence, Husain 'liberated' himself to devote his full time to his own artistic endeavors.
