The central figures of the horse and rider at centre right and the fallen soldiers in the foreground are closely related to a study of a battle scene by Raphael, now at Chatsworth (no. 57). Marco da Ravenna's print is probably based on Raphael's designs for the Sala di Costantino at the Vatican, which were painted by Giulio Romano. The final composition of Giulio's fresco of the 'Battle of the Milvian Bridge' however differs significantly from the present engraving.
