Lot Essay

The signature reduced to 'M.lle Noireterre' indicates that the present miniature was painted about 1793, during the terror of the French Revolution when the arist, an aristocrat, tried to escape persecution. For a miniature of her pre-Revolutionary period, see lot 188.
