MARTIN, Gabriel – BROCHARD, Michel (d. c.1729) – Musaeum selectum, sive catalogus librorum viri clariss. Michaelis Brochard, cum indice alphabetico. Paris: G. Martin, 1729. 8° (191 x 120mm). Half-title. (Title with short marginal tear with old tape repair on verso.) Contemporary quarter calf, red edges (crudely rebacked preserving original gilt spine with red morocco label). Provenance: James Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford and 9th Earl of Balcarres (1847-1913, Bibliotheca Lindesiana armorial bookplate). PRICED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND. Michel Brochard, professor of the humanities at the Collège Mazarin, formed an important collection with ‘significant holdings in French poetry’ (North). He was a friend and adviser of the collector Du Fay. In the preface to the catalogue Martin notes that the printed catalogue is a copy of Brochard's manuscript catalogue. Martin added the lot numbers and the index. Pollard & Ehrman, p. 337; Taylor, p.14; North 31.
HOYM, Karl Heinrich Graf von (1694-1736) – MARTIN, Gabriel. Catalogus librorum bibliothecae illustrissimi viri Caroli Henrici Comitis de Hoym.. Paris: G. & Claude Martin, 1738. 8° (200 x 122mm). (Some occasional light spotting and staining, heavier to gathering K.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine, red edges (rubbed, upper joint cracking). ESTIMATES AND PRICES REALIZED entered in manuscript in a contemporary hand. Hoym's library was entirely in the French taste and included manuscripts, prints, maps, and fine bindings. He had his books bound by the foremost French binders, including Boyet, Girou, and Padeloup le Jeune. When Hoym was sentenced to life in prison after a series of false charges were brought against him, he committed suicide, and his library was then sold to benefit his heirs. In Martin's preface, he proposed to sell the collection en bloc and then by auction if no buyer was found before 1 April. In order to establish the total value of the library for the en bloc sale, Martin created estimates for each lot. Brunet III, 1497; North 46.

(Occasional light spotting.) Contemporary calf, gilt spine, speckled edges (rubbed, covers stained). PRICED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND.
