THE FIRST COMPLETE ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE EIGHT BOOKS OF PETER MARTYR'S 'DE NOVO ORBE', one of the most important sourcebooks for the history of discovery and conquest of the New World, from Columbus through Cortés. Martyr, a member of the Spanish royal court who had been present when Columbus returned in 1493, was at the highest level of involvement with New World affairs. He began publishing his history in 1511. The first complete edition of all eight books was issued in Latin in 1532 and the first three of Martyr's books were first translated into English by Richard Eden as The Decades of the Newe World (see lot 349). The full translation of all the books, continued by Michael Lok, is here first published. Alden & Landis 612/3; Arents Tobacco 6; Church 358; JCB (3) II:86; Sabin 1563; STC 650.
