MASSARI, Francesco. Ischia Isola, olim Aenaria. Naples: [first quarter of the 17th century].
Engraved bird's-eye view map of Ischia on a single Royal sheet, 400 x 517mm (engraving 343 x 460mm). Title set in a decorative foliate cartouche with the printer's device of Massari, dedication set in a decorative cartouche surmounted by the arms Biagio Aldimari, scalebar, decorated with warships engaged in battle, contemporary manuscript key written in right-hand margin, Cuma and Ischia shown in perspective. (Some light staining, lower margin folded not affecting plate mark, verso strengthened along old folds.)
A VERY RARE MAP OF ISCHIA IN FINE CONDITION. In addition to the island, the smaller islands Vivara and Procida and the mainland coast are depicted. Topographical features, including mountains, fields and roads are shown in great detail. Other features, such as ruins, trees, houses and farms are indicated. Ischia was famous for its hot springs, and the manuscript key lists all the thermae, numbering each and underlining the corresponding placename. The watermark is similar to Woodward 158-173.
