MASSOLO, Pietro. Sonetti morali. Bologna: Antonio Manuzio, 1557.
Aldine 8o (142 x 91 mm). Italic type. Small version of the woodcut dolphin and anchor device on title and last page. (Light dampstaining and browning throughout, few pages with ink scribbling.) Old vellum.
EDITIO PRINCEPS, containing 400 numbered sonnets, by the Bolognese poet. One of six books with the imprint Antonio Manuzio, the son of Aldo Manuzio and brother of Paulo, and with the printing-place given as Bologna. According to Sorbelli's documentary evidence in Storia della Stampa in Bologna (1929), Antonio left Venice about 1555 and went to Bologna. Very soon thereafter, in order to assist his brother, Paulo began negotiating with Bologna city officials for the establishment of a printing press. Nothing further, however, was ever heard about it, except that six books exist with the imprints from this press. Both Renouard and Sorbelli doubt the actual existence of the Aldine press at Bologna and believe that the six books were printed in Venice. Adams M-865; Ahmanson-Murphy 445; Renouard 172.14.
