The attribution to the Master HB, an artist in the circle of Lucas Cranach, was suggested by Professor Dieter Koepplin in a letter dated 14 January 2007. Professor Koepplin relates the present work to four very similar drawings of apostles, Saints Simon, Bartholomew, Peter and John, now in the Museo Civico, Pavia, of which the Saint John bears the monogram HB (C. Dodgson, 'Saxon Monogrammist HB', Old Master Drawings, XXXVI (March 1935), pls. 70-71). All five drawings show the strong influence of Cranach's woodcut series Christ, the Apostles and Saint Paul of 1510/15 (Holl. 21-44). We are grateful to Professor Koepplin for his kind help in preparing this note.
