We are grateful to Mr. Jan van Helmont for identifying the arms on the reverse of this and the following lot as those of d'Avalos, the Spanish family of Naples known for their patronage of Titian (see the celebrated Portrait of Alfonso d'Avalos, Marquis of Vasto, governor of Milan, c. 1533, Los Angeles, J. Paul Getty Museum).
