Lot Essay

Best known for his work as a caricaturist, Ted Scheel's work appeared in many publications here and abroad including the New York Times, the New York World-Telegram & Sun and the Saturday Review of Literature. His satirical caricatures and cartoons of politicians, literary figures, scientists and radio celebrities were collected in the 1951 book, The Face is Familiar. Scheel also worked as the Art Director of the American Institute of Public Opinion. Tabard's portrait was made during the 1920s in Washington, D.C., where Scheel was working in the office of Bachrach.
