MAYKOV, Apollon Nikolayevich [1821-1897]. Stikhotvorenija. [Poems]. St Petersburg: Prats, 1842

An exceptional copy of the first edition of Maykov's first book, with an autograph note by the author, from the library of poet K.M. Solov’ev. This is now a rare publication, of which no copy is cited in auction records. The book met with the approval and very favourable review of the influential critic Vissarion Belinsky. Maykov’s poetry conveys a lyrical cherishing of Russian nature, history, village life and folklore, combined with a passion for classical antiquities. Several of his poems were set to music by Russian composers, including Rimsky-Korsakov and Tchaikovsky. This copy carries a very interesting history of provenance: K.M. Solov’ev (1867-1935) was a merchant and one of the greatest Russian book collectors, with over 60,000 books in his personal library (this is n.16575). Aleksandr Nikolaevich Strugovshchikov (1808-1878) was a Russian poet and translator of works by Schiller and Goethe, including Faust. In the 1840s he wrote a poem entitled ‘To Maykov’. Kilgour 681. Not in Smirnov-Sokol’skii, Moia biblioteka.

Octavo (148 x 231mm). With the half-title, loose author’s autograph note (varying degrees of spotting throughout, thumbing to first quire). 19th-century Russian half calf over marbled boards, spine gilt and lettered (extremities rubbed, spine sunned). Provenance: A. Strugovshchikov (contemporary inscription to front endleaf) – 19th-century bibliographical annotations (endleaf) – K.M. Solov’ev (library stamp, front endleaf) – stamp for pricing (rear pastedown).
