MCKINLEY WRITES TO A CLOSE POLITICAL ALLY

An intriguing note confirming that the Chief Executive will make a particular nomination: "Will nominate Rittman on reconvening of Congress; Middle of next week in time, send full name." Mark Hanna (1837-1904), Senator from Ohio and Chairman of the Republican National Committee, was a prominent Ohio businessman prior to his political career. During the 1896 presidential campaign, Hanna had directed McKinley's run for the nomination and helped gather more than $3 million from industrialiasts to defeat opponent William Jennings Bryan.

While pre-presidential autograph letters by McKinley exist in "a moderate number... those of White House date can be considered rare" (John M. Taylor, From the White House Inkwell, p.148).
