This painting depicts a helmetshrike, a species native to sub-Saharan Africa. Its distinctive facial bristles and crest, rendered with animated precision, reflect the artist’s fascination with avian physiognomy. Melchior d’Hondecoeter’s access to exotic species—either through menageries or the collections of wealthy patrons—allowed him to observe and record rare birds with remarkable fidelity.

We are grateful to Dr. Fred G. Meijer for endorsing the attribution to Melchior d’Hondecoeter (written communication, 20 April 2025, on the basis of photographs)
