Original salmon pink cloth, gilt-decorated on front cover, t.e.g., pictorial endpapers (covers slightly faded, endpapers slightly browned). Provenance: Bethany [Tudor], daughter of children's book illustrator Tasha Tudor (gift inscription, letter tipped-in).
FIRST EDITION, SIGNED BY ERNEST SHEPARD on the title-page, with a letter tipped-in from Shepard to Mrs. McCready (Tasha Tudor's married name) dated 28 November 1957 inviting Tudor, her husband, and daughter to visit with him and his family. Tudor was married to Thomas McCready from 1938 to 1960, and their family spent the academic year 1957-1958 in Sussex, England where they met Shepard. This copy is also INSCRIBED BY TASHA TUDOR to her daughter, Bethany, on the half-title page: "To Bethany with much love from Mummy." A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY.
