Lot Essay

Studies of four groups of acrobats are related to von Schwind's series of woodcuts, Akrobatische Spiele, published in the Münchener Bilderbogen and Fliegende Blätter in 1858.
According to Professor Held's notes, the drawing of A gathering of literary figures in Frankfurt depicts a literary tea and the reading of the Bürgerschlacht, a Frankfurt local farce.
Portrait of a young boy is related to a print, a copy of which is in the Graphische Sammlungen, Munich (inv. 150903).
