SUPERIOR EDITION, 3 vols., (vol. 3 in 15 original parts), 8vo (210 x 140mm., original parts slightly larger), 177 hand-coloured lithographed plates, including 160 of birds and 116 of eggs, vols. 1 and 2 in contemporary dark blue half calf gilt, spines with red morocco labels, vol. 3 in original 15 printed paper wrappers and contained in matching half calf box

EXTREMELY SCARCE. The work, issued in parts commencing in 1881 and intended to extend to 5 volumes, was never finished. The title-page to volume 3 and plates 158-159 were never issued. Vols. 1 and 2 contain Indigenous Land Birds and vol. 3 Indigenous Waders; vols. 4 and 5 were to have contained Indigenous Water Birds and Accidental Visitors. It was published in two editions 'Superior' and 'Ordinary', but neither edition has appeared at auction in recent years. Nissen IVB 650; Mullens and Swann 421
