Birket Foster first visited Venice in 1868 in the company of Fred Walker and William Quiller Orchardson. Between 1871 and 1877 he was to return more times than he could accurately recall in order to execute a series of 50 watercolours for Charles Seely, a wealthy corn merchant and M.P. for Lincoln. Seely paid £5,000 for the set, Birket Foster's largest single commission.
