In the first letter (written five days after the marriage of Eugène to Princesse Auguste-Amélie, daughter of the King of Bavaria), Napoleon announces his arrival in Stuttgart, sending 'Deux baisers à la Princesse Auguste, l'un pour moi, l'autre pour l'Impératrice'; in the second he comments on the unsuitability of the addresses of the Italians to Prince Eugène, deciding that the remedy is not to print them; in the third he complains strongly about the architect who has been working on a house for Eugène, 'Il est absurde qu'on ait dépensé 150,000 francs dans une maison si petite que la vôtre; et ce qu'on y a fait ne vaut pas le quart de cette somme,' pointing out that in Paris he will be housed in a palace; in the fourth he proposes to make wheat available to the King of Bavaria, and to offer him the Italian Tyrol on condition he maintains no troops or fortifications beyond the Trent.
