Lot Essay

This expansive view of the plain in Fontainebleau Forest is particularly notable for its stylistic and compositional similarities to the work of Diaz's friend and contemporary, Théodore Rousseau, and depicts a site that was painted frequently by both artists. The atmospheric sky, which has its roots in the paintings of John Constable, the low horizon, small group of trees and lone figure, are all trademark motifs of the Barbizon school.
