NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION, 1901-1904
The expedition medal 'NATIONAL ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION 1901 "DISCOVERY"' around the circumference surrounding an image of a penguin in the Antarctic, the reverse blank, white metal, 1 3/16in. (3cm.) diameter
'The small expedition medal. These small 30mm silver medals were struck before the expedition left England and were in two forms. One type, for Antarctic sports, had a die-struck reverse inscription "Antarctic Sports won by" [see Royds' medal for Antarctic sports, Christie's, 26 Sept. 1997, lot 130]; the other had a plain reverse for award at the discretion of officers' (D.E. Yelverton, Antarctica Unveiled, Boulder: 2000, p.397).
VERY RARE. The medals were awarded for a range of competitions from an athletics meeting to mark Edward VII's birthday on 9 November 1902 (the winners listed in the South Polar Times for April 1903) to dominoes and acrostics. Yelverton (op. cit.) records just one blank reverse medal (to Gilbert Scott) 'the sole example known' to which the present medal can be added.
