The sitter wears the armour of a Heavy Cavalry officer, of blue steel decorated with etched and gilt bands. The close helmet on the table beside him is of a type that remained in field use until c. 1650-1660. The very exact rendition of the small-sword, in combination with the sitter's dress, places the portrait at c. 1650, and no later than 1670.
