2 volumes, 8o (193 x 119 mm). 2 engraved frontispieces by A. Motte, 2 folding letterpress tables, 47 folding engraved plates, 3 engraved head-pieces by Motte. (Some minor soiling, a few pale stains.) Contemporary calf gilt, partially unopened (front cover of volume one nearly detached, other joints starting, lettering pieces renewed, scuffed at the extremities); quarter morocco slipcase. Provenance: Leonard Parkinson (signature volume two); John A. Clarke (presentation inscription from Parkinson title-page volume two); Hardwicke Knight (bookplates); Franklin Institute Library, The James T. Morris Memorial Fund (bookplates and library stamps, dispersed 1985).
FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF THE PRINCIPIA. The first edition was published in Latin in 1687 (see lot 265). Motte's translation is followed by a translation of Newton's "System of the World" (volume two from page 200). John Machin's unsuccessful attempt to rectify Newton's lunar theory is inadvertently included twice: once at the end of each volume. Babson 20; Norman 1587; Wallis 23. See PMM 161. (2)
